Have fun shopping! And, if you could, help us out in the comments section by sharing what items you find for less than $5.

I tried this yesterday and must have been given a bad code because it didn't work.
Just now I tried again with $7.98 in my cart. I punched in the code and it took $7.98 off.
I don't know if it is a computer error or if the code is worth more than it states but my cart is showing a balance of $0.00.
Either way, thanks for fowarding on a usable code!

Songs Kids Love to Sing: Sunday School Songs
id # 53711780
Price $4.99 before coupon (FREE after coupon)
To find this CD put the id# in the search field and choose music as what you are searching for.
There are SO VERY MANY choices near or under $5 it is a bit overwhelming but one great thing about looking for music on Borders.com is that you can listen to clips of nearly every CD they have for sale.
For the homeschoolers out there, I also saw some interesting CD's that sang math songs. They seemed just a bit advanced for my 4 year old but I was tempted.

If anyone tries to order anything that's over $5, there's a catch to this offer: it's only applicable if there isn't a better online discount. There was a book I wanted and it was 30% off online, so I would have saved $6.75 and the coupon code wouldn't give me another $5 off. So it wasn't in my budget then! Boo! Thanks for the tip though! Everyone will just want to stick with $5 and under items!

There is a book called Buy It For Less that is 3.98. I had to laugh at that one. I found a lot of kids books for 5.95. I also found a Christian hits CD "for kids". It's probably like the Kids Bop CD's you see on TV. It was 7.95 but it would make a good stocking stuffer for $3.

I figured it out. The code takes off $5 per book. I am not sure if it is supposed to or not but my cart is still at $0.00 even with 4 books under $5 each added. However, when I added a book for more than $5 it only took $5 off of it.
That is a pretty good deal considering they have quite a few kids books for under $5!

I have been trying to place an order for about 15 min. now and got no where..I called customer service. They explained that the website was undergoing maint and recommended me trying back later today. I found several kid books I am going to purchase. Thanks for the tip!

I got all the way through the process with my $4.99 Dr. Seuss boardbook. My cart read $0.00. Yet when I finally hit submit, it said, "We're sorry. This feature is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."

I'm getting an error message...not sure what I am doing wrong. Glad it is working for some!
Posted by: Tara | July 25, 2008 at 10:28 AM
I also got the Sunday School songs CD, but for some reason I got an error on the final screen of the checkout. I e-mailed customer service, so we'll see what happens.

I just got the "Hear No Evil" kids cd that was $4.99, I couldn't listen to it b/c I am at work, but it says it is general kids music and the names of the songs looked fun!
Posted by: Amy | July 25, 2008 at 10:29 AM
I also confirmed that you could use this for multiple items under $5.00. I can't imagine that this is what they intended though. It doesn't really matter, because I can't even complete an order right now.

My 11-month old loves the "Baby Faces" series of board books by Roberta Grobel Intrater, so I just bought 6 of them at $4.95 each, used the promo code and "ship to store" and we are getting 6 fabulous books for free! Thank you for you posting this great info!
Posted by: Lori | July 25, 2008 at 10:46 AM
it appears to be per book. However, I was unable to complete my order as long as my total order was $0.00. Once I added a more expensive book (on I had been waiting to buy), I was able to checkout with no problem. I'm now well stocked on little golden books ($2.99 each) for gifts.

I am just going to the kids books and searching based upon lowest price to highest. There are some great things. Thanks! For freebies, people can check my blog out (scroll down) at www.ann-crabs.blogspot.com.

My shopping cart had five books for kids and the total showed zero after applying the code. However, when I tried to place the order, the site wouldn't let me. I will try again. Are they realizing this is a mistake? Anyone else have a problem?
Posted by: Jodi W | July 25, 2008 at 11:12 AM
I'm trying to order a book but right at the last step when I click place order I get "We're sorry. This feature is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later." I'll try later.

I was going to purchase a CD for under $5, but found that you do still have to pay for shipping. If you want to get an item for less than $5, paying $2.98 for shipping really cuts into your savings!

Money Saving Mom here: Rachel, request to have the book shipped to your store for pick up and shipping is free!
Posted by: Rachel | July 25, 2008 at 11:30 AM
Technically, you can get as many books as you want for free, as long as they are under $5 and shipped to the store. My question is, should we take advantage of this or not? I am just not sure that is what they intended this to do. What do you think Crystal?
Posted by: Kelli | July 25, 2008 at 11:31 AM
It's crashing on mine... and not working at all.
Posted by: Jessica | July 25, 2008 at 11:31 AM
I called Borders and everyone is trying to do the same thing. The customer service lady was really helpful and esplained that their computer's won't let them do it totally for free but she could get me a cheap book if I wanted. i didn't have time to search but I suggest if you want to do it you find a book for $5.99 then try. It won't be free but it will be cheap!
Posted by: Clair | July 25, 2008 at 11:34 AM
Apparently so. About 15 minutes ago, I had 12 books in my cart for $0. It wouldn't go through. So I tried adding another book to make my total over $0. Still wouldn't work. It said it wouldn't allow me to place my order because of current technical difficulties. So, yeah, I'm guessing they figured it out. Darn... I was about to have enough Dr. Suess books for all the first birthday parties I'll be attending in the next few years.

I tried to order a book for 4.99 and it did total out at 0. The final page won't submit though, so I will have to keep trying. Anyone else have this problem?
Posted by: Rebecca | July 25, 2008 at 11:38 AM
My order was $8.48 and it took $7.99 off.
Posted by: Ann | July 25, 2008 at 11:49 AM
I would suggest you keep trying. Mine errored out a bunch of times, but once I had at least one book over $5, and I tried a couple of times, it worked. I got a bunch of books for only $2.10. Awesome!
Posted by: Rachel | July 25, 2008 at 11:55 AM
i ordered two kids books and an Elvis CD for $3.20. this was a great deal!
Posted by: make art every day | July 25, 2008 at 12:18 PM
It worked for me. I ordered "The Worn Out Woman: When Life is Full and Your Spirit is Empty". I'm looking forward to your series on it and wanted to read along. The first time I tried it didn't work, so I closed the window and re-opened another window then it worked. Of course I still owe money, but it was cheaper than even Amazon and there's no shipping since I'm picking it up at a local Borders.
Posted by: Edwena | July 25, 2008 at 12:30 PM
Thank you! It worked now!
Posted by: Finance Girl | July 25, 2008 at 12:31 PM
I don't know if you realize this or not, but comments I made have been completely changed and then I see my comment under someone elses name. I don't really care, but this is strange, don't you think? BTW--LOVE your site--thanks so much. Ann

I haven't tried placing an order yet with the coupon code (working on it), but just a heads up...this problem with checking out isn't a new issue. I actually tried to place an order several days ago for some stuff for medical school, and I was getting the same error message about the feature not being available. Emailing customer care got no response, so I finally had to call and have the order placed over the phone. That error has been up at the very least since last Sunday, and apparently they haven't managed to fix it yet...

I got 12 books all under $5 each for $.95! I had To add one book over $5 to make my total not be $0 and it worked fine for me!! No free but NOT BAD!! THANK YOU!
Posted by: Ashley | July 25, 2008 at 01:08 PM
Thanks for posting!
I got 15 books for $25. I am all set for my upcomming birthday parties!!
Posted by: Sarah | July 25, 2008 at 01:24 PM
I can tell you it is legit for you to order a bunch of books and get $5 taken off each book, as long as its just one order.I placed an order for me using the code and than tried to order something and get it shipped to a friend and it said i already used the promotional code.
Posted by: Kat | July 25, 2008 at 02:00 PM
I don't know if someone else has posted this already, but you can do your own search for any kind of books you want on their website and then choose to sort by Prices:Low to High. For example, I searched "Disney" and then sorted them by price and found a bunch of Disney Little Golden Books for $2.99. You don't have to use the link posted above!
Posted by: Heather | July 25, 2008 at 02:03 PM
I just placed an order using the code - I got the error message until I added another book to make the total greater than zero! After the total was .99, it went through!
Posted by: Jeanette | July 25, 2008 at 02:17 PM
I just did it and got $6.24 off my purchase of $6.24.
Posted by: Mamacita | July 25, 2008 at 02:27 PM
Here's how I did it:
1. Selected "Books"
2. Selected "Romance"
3. Selected "Paperback"
4. Selected "Under $10"
5. Sorted by Price, Lowest to Highest
6. Picked the under $5s that I wanted (confirmed: Coupon works on ALL books)
7. Chose two $5.50 books (I could have chosen one, but they were a series)
8. Chose pickup at the store
9. Paid $1 for seven books
I, too, got the error when I had $0 in my cart, but the moment I added one of those $5.50 books, it was smooth sailing. Even if it's not -free-, $.14 a book is not a bad price.
And when I'm done, I'll donate them to the library and get to take the full amount as a donation on my taxes.

I keep getting the following message for the last few hours:
We're sorry. This feature is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.
Anyone else having the same problem still?
Posted by: Peggy | July 25, 2008 at 02:38 PM
I keep getting to shipping options and then it goes to a blank page!!
Posted by: Jane | July 25, 2008 at 02:46 PM
It finally worked for me! I did end up paying 12.98, but that was less than the price of one of the three that I bought. Thanks for the tip!
Posted by: Rebecca | July 25, 2008 at 02:58 PM
I just got 13 items for $2.95. My total discount was $45.50. I think it would have been a little bit more if I had been able to get my Border's reward card to go through. It took a long time to get the site to work correctly, but it was well worth my time, especially since the kids are all napping. Thanks Crystal!
Posted by: Lorrie | July 25, 2008 at 03:08 PM
How do you have the item sent to the store?
Posted by: Rachel | July 25, 2008 at 03:30 PM
Where are you able to choose "pick up in store"? Mine just totaled with shipping without giving me a choice.
Posted by: Theresa | July 25, 2008 at 03:36 PM
Has anyone been having luck checking out recently or have they just shut that feature down completely? I've been trying to check out for an hour now and it keeps giving me the message "We're sorry. This feature is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later." I'm just wondering if I'm wasting my time sitting here or should I be persistant?
Posted by: Heather | July 25, 2008 at 04:14 PM
I just got an order to FINALLY to go through at about 5:15 Eastern Time. I had tried for hours and I decided to do a small order(about 6 books) using my husbands email instead of mine and it worked for some reason. I then returned and tried the previous order using my email and I STILL couldn't get it to work. I don't know how the different email address could change anything but it worked!
Posted by: Katherine | July 25, 2008 at 04:24 PM
Worked for me!! Did have to bring the total above zero though. All in all, I was able to get 27 Dr. Seuss and Curious George books for $1.98. I entered the code and it just kept taking it off from every book I added to my cart. Very strange promotion!!
Posted by: Courtney, Jer.33:3 | July 25, 2008 at 04:39 PM
It finally worked for me. I kept trying with no luck. I finally broke and got a book for $5.99, and even when I placed my order I got that same error page. But I checked my email and there was a confirmation email saying my card would be charged .99 and I would recieve another email when my 10 books were shipped. YES!! So I guess it worked even though I thought it didn't.
Posted by: Laura | July 25, 2008 at 04:40 PM
Hey! I got $7.99 off one order and $9.99 on another. Thanks! (PS--I figured out the mistake I was making earlier. It just reads weird, eh?)
Posted by: Ann | July 25, 2008 at 04:46 PM
Awesome!! We don't have a Borders near us, but I am getting my total up to $25 to get the free shipping (with books we planned on getting soon anyway) and adding a whole bunch of Little Golden Books for gifts. They are all 2.99 so I am getting a whole bunch of books for $26.
Posted by: Heather | July 25, 2008 at 04:48 PM
I've been trying all day. I even used a different brower, changed it to a smaller order, and used my husbands email and it still doesn't work for me.
Posted by: Peggy | July 25, 2008 at 05:00 PM
You might just have to keep hitting the back button whenever it doesn't go through and hitting "next" again. Sometimes you have to wait a few minutes.
