Katie emailed in a great example of how to make CVS work for you:

Recently, I’ve discovered a way to save money on formula which has helped us tremendously. When my milk supply left after nine months of breastfeeding, we suddenly had to start shelling out $27 a week for formula. This was a huge chunk of our $35/week grocery budget. But, of course, CVS to the rescue.

Almost every time I go to CVS, I get $10 off a $50 purchase. When I use this, plus coupons, plus ECBs, I can make a really good formula purchase. I’ve attached two pictures to show what I got using the magical $10/$50.

In the first picture, I spent $8 and received $5 ECBs!

In the second picture, I spent $13 and received $3.99 in ECBs.

Way to go, Katie!

Shannon over at Rocks In My Dryer (a blog I adore even if it doesn’t have much to do with saving money!) usually hosts a weekly Works-For-Me-Wednesday feature with loads of helpful ideas, inspiration, and information–especially for moms!

She’s mixing things up today and asking everyone to share what doesn’t work for us. I thought it would be fun to share some bargain-shopping things which I’ve found don’t work well for me at this current season of my life:

1) Sending in for manufacturer’s rebates. Believe it or not, I usually find mail-in rebates to be more work than they are worth. In addition, since we are on a strict $40/week grocery budget, I don’t have room to pay for extra things just because I get a full rebate back.

My only exception to the no-rebates-rule is when I buy something at CVS that is already free after ECBs and there is a full manufacturer’s rebate I can send in for. Then, and usually only then, I’ll normally take the time to send in for it.

2) Buying groceries more than once per week. I rarely shop outside of my designated once-a-week shopping trip. Otherwise, I find myself wasting time and money buying things I probably didn’t need in the first place. As an added bonus, I like staying home and find I am much more productive and calmer when I make an effort to stay home more.

3) Shopping at Walgreens. Should I admit this?! I stopped shopping at Walgreens almost eight months ago and have only been back three times since then to hit some exceptional-can’t-miss deal. I shopped there regularly for a few years but after I had my second baby, I felt the need to streamline my shopping in order to keep things simple.

I’ve found that one or two transactions at CVS each week keep us plenty stocked on household items. Plus, I prefer the CVS system and cashiers to Walgreens. If we ever move somewhere that does not have a CVS, I will certainly be happy to go back to Walgreens shopping again since I know there are lots of great deals to be had there!

So there are my bargain-shopping "what-doesn’t-work-for-me" confessions. What about you? We are all in different situations and locations with different families, different diet preferences and restrictions, and different time constraints so it should be interesting to hear what doesn’t work for others.

Also, I’d love to know if I’m the only person who only shops once per week, doesn’t send in for rebates, and skips Walgreens most of the time. Do tell!

And speaking of things that don’t work, if you want to hear about one of my biggest over-achieving, first-time mothering flops, you’ll enjoy this post.

…why oh why can’t we have a Sav-Mor Sidewalk Sale in Kansas City? I mean, look at the possibilities:

All this for $12. (Read about Keren’s super shopping trip here.)

Or all this for $6. (Read about Jessica’s incredible deals here.)

You can read more about the Sav-Mor sidewalk sales here and here.

I’m trying not to be covetous or anything, but I’m just sayin’ to the Sav-Mor store owners that Kansas City would be a really nice place to build another store.

A really nice place. I’m just sayin’.

Since our Kroger stores were bought out by Price Chopper, I’ve been exploring new stores and options to replace the good deals I used to be able to pull off at Kroger. So far, it’s been a new challenge and I’ve not always been thrilled with the results, but I was very excited to buy all of the above for only $0.64 at Hyvee two days ago.

Here’s the breakdown:

Hyvee had HBO cereals on sale 5 for $10 and I still had two more $2/1 coupons. So I got both of those for free.

Then, I went to check on the Huggies CleanTeam wipes and was elated to find they had some wipes for $0.99 each! Using the $3/2 coupons, I was able to get 4 free plus I got $0.50 overage for each package I bought.

The overage was applied to the pears which were on sale for $0.99/lb (my target price for most fresh fruits and veggies!).

So, all total, I spent $0.64!

For those of you in the KC area, be sure to check your Hyvee stores for the $0.99 CleanTeam wipes. I left plenty for you. :)

As a side note: When I have a high dollar coupon like the $3/2 and I’m headed out to shop at a few stores, I normally tuck the coupon in with my other coupons to use and make a note on each list to check for that item. Oftentimes, one of the stores will have the item in-stock and on a good sale price which will make it free or almost free. The extra minute it takes to check normally pays off!

So, if your Wal-Mart doesn’t have the CleanTeam wipes for $1.64, be sure to check your other area stores if you’re going to be shopping at them anyway. You just never know!

Because we had a little bit more time on Saturday, we hit more stores than normal: Aldi, CVS, Price Chopper, Hen House, and Wal-Mart. Our total was right around $39.80!

This week’s menu:

Breakfasts
Whole-wheat pancakes, freshly-made juice
Oatmeal, fresh juice
Cereal, carrot/orange/banana/flax seed smoothie
Baked oatmeal, fruit
Homemade cinnamon rolls, fruit

Lunches
Split peas, brown rice, carrots
PB&J, pears
Mixed green salad, hard boiled eggs, toast
Leftovers
Baked potatoes, broccoli, cheese

Dinners
Chicken broccoli rice casserole, homemade whole-wheat bread, salad, green beans, grapefruit
Chili, apple slices, homemade bread, cheese slices (We’re likely going to be having this twice this week since I made such a big pot of it! If so, we’ll serve it over rice with cheese sprinkled on top the second night!)
Meatloaf, mashed potatoes, green beans, biscuits, mixed green salad
Broccoli and cheddar crepes, homemade cinnamon rolls, fruit salad
Barbecue beef pizza, corn on the cob, grapefruit
